The concept of a Delaware Valley High School Hall of Fame was born in the mid 1990's. Attorney, John Klemeyer, athletic director, Ron Robacher, and administrator, Dr. Thomas Finan, were influential in initiating the program. A committee was formed and the decision was made to include the original Milford and Matamoras High Schools as well as the current Delaware Valley School District. The purposes of the hall of fame are four fold: first, to honor former students who took advantage of the opportunities presented to them by our school district; second, to recognize alumni who became leaders as adults and contributed to their community, nation and world; thirdly, to provide examples of excellence to current Delaware Valley students as an inspiration for them to take full advantage of the opportunities afforded them by our school district; finally, to challenge the community, administration and teaching staff to continue the district's long tradition of scholastic and extracurricular excellence.
The original Hall of Fame had two divisions, athletic and academic, with the term "professional" added to the academic category at a later date. The initial class of honorees was inducted in the fall of 1996. The academic division honored Doctor Leo F. Black and Warner Depuy. Among Doctor Black's many achievements was Chairmanship of the Board of Governors for the Mayo Clinic. Mr. Depuy's accomplishments included his service as Pennsylvania Secretary of Revenue and Chairman of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission for the Reagan Administration. The athletic honorees were Susan Lapriore Schultz and Ray Wagner. Susan starred on the state champion 1978 field hockey team and went on to excel on the Division 1 level at Davis and Elkins College. Ray was a legendary wrestler at Delaware Valley and continued his career at Kent State University. He later played professional football for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Denver Gold.
New classes of inductees have entered the Hall of Fame in ensuing years. Currently, more than eighty people share in this honor. Plaques for the members are on display on the Hall of Fame wall at Delaware Valley High School. They may also be found on the school district website by choosing the alumni link. The Hall of Fame Committee encourages input from the community on information of potential nominees. Suggestions may be made directly to committee members or by contacting Jayson Pope at Delaware Valley School District, phone number 570-296-1827.
