Discrimination and Gang Activity in Pike County
Saturday, March 1st from 10am to 2pm

Several local community organizations and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission are hosting a forum to address discrimination and gang activity in Pike County.  The Forum will be open to the public and is on Saturday, March 1st from 10am to 2pm at the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) located in Dingmans Ferry off Route 209 (signs between mile markers 8 and 9).  Refreshments will be provided.  Speakers include representatives from the Tri-State Unity Coalition, Unity Coalition of the Poconos and Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.  The Rallying Youth Organized Together Against Rape (RYOT) from Safe Haven will put on a socio-drama.  Also speaking will be Michael Leonard Sr., a criminal justice consultant and gang expert (www.gangsrreal.com) and Dr. Letitia Lladoc, a multicultural instructor and educator.  As communities become more aware of bias and gang activity they are more empowered to address it.  Please attend the forum to learn how you can help protect and take back your community.  For more information, contact the Tri-State Unity Coalition at 570-686-5555 or www.tristateunity.org and tristateunity@gmail.com.

Principal's Message

Dear Shohola Parents,

*February has been a very hectic month so far.  The weather this winter has really been problematic.  Let*s hope that spring comes early.

*As you know, our Parent-Teacher Conferences have been rescheduled for this Thursday, February 21 (weather permitting).  Students will be dismissed at 12:15.   If we should have a delayed opening on Thursday, the conferences will again be rescheduled and students will have a regular dismissal at 3:30 p.m.

*Our 5th graders are finishing up make up examinations for the PSSA Writing Assessment.  The students really worked hard, in spite of the many weather distractions.  Our next round of PSSA*s will begin on April 1st.  Students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 will participate in the Reading and Mathematics assessments.

*The 3, 4, and 5th grade Reading Incentive Sleepover is scheduled for Friday, February 22.  This is always a great event.  Reading, physical activity, and snacks are shared throughout the evening.  The evening concludes with a movie and students return to their respective areas (boys in the cafeteria, girls in the gym) for the night.  Miss Lizzi is once again in charge of pulling the event together.  Parent and faculty support is tremendous for this event.  I always look forward to the event.  Don*t forget each child needs a book for admission.

*There is a Special Education Roundtable Committee Meeting on Wednesday, February 19, 2008.  This meeting will be held in the Shohola Elementary School library.  All interested parents and community members are invited to attend.

*I hope you can enjoy the sunshine, when it breaks through the clouds.  Have a great week!

                       Sincerely,  Peg  Schaffer, Ph.D.

6th Grade Recognition Committee

The 6th Grade Recognition Committee is proud to announce that we have raised nearly $1,800 toward end of year field trips and activities!  The Wednesday Popcorn sales are wonderfully successful thanks to the commitment of the popping team: Jane Drumheller, Jessica Sheehan, Michelle Wood, Ana Balcarcel and Natalie Leili.  Students and staff are certainly going crazy for the yummy smell of popcorn every Wednesday morning as we prepare nearly 300 bags each day!  Why all the fundraising for this group?  Well - we have the largest class ever in Shohola right now in the sixth grade - 120 students in all. When researching historical and educational opportunities for field trips - simple admission for an afternoon event can be upwards of $4k-$5k when we factor in bussing, admission to the event and food.  Our intention is to raise as much money as we can to lower any costs that may be shared per student.  To enhance our fundraising attempts, we will be selling food and goodies at the following school events: Parent-Teacher Conferences (2/21), Winter Carnival (3/8) and the Tricky Tray (3/29).  If you'd like to volunteer to DONATE BOUGHT or BAKED ITEMS, or SELL during 2 hour shifts at any of these events, we would LOVE your help!  We need two adult volunteers and up to three sixth grade volunteers for each sale.  Additionally, the Sixth Grade Class will be promoting an Easter Candy Sale featuring Teeny Poppers from Gertrude Hawk.  This promotion will deliver 50% profit of the entire sale right back the the Sixth Grade Excursion budget.

Many field trip options are being researched by the committee members. Once prices and details of all options are obtained, they will be presented for a vote by the 6th Grade parents.

To volunteer to help or donate, please contact Cena Block at 296-2362.  Thank you!
