- The grain is ground into meal between two millstones (see image 5 above).
- The lower "bed"/"nether" stones does not move.
- The upper "runner" stone is fractions of an inch above the bed stone. It is balanced and turned by the "driver" at the top of the "spindle."
- The spindle that passes through the bed stone is turned by a belt and pulley on the lower level.
