August, 2007

Dear Grade K & 1 Parents,

We are starting our Reading Incentive Program.  This year your child will be reading to earn D.V.E.S. Wampum.  The way this works is, every fifty (50) pages read will equal one (1) Wampum.  Each time a child returns a sheet to school, they will get Wampum and a new sheet.  Please note:  Nothing read before September 1, 2007, may count.  That is included in our Summer Reading.

Once a month, students will make Wampum selections from the Wampum Trading Post.  We will have a variety of different items that they can purchase, including a large selection of books.

When completed or just before each Wampum store day, Wampum reading sheets with your signature, not initials, are to be turned in as your child arrives at school in the morning.  When students turn in their reading sheets, if they have extra pages left over, they will be carried forward to the next reading sheet.

There are TWO ways to win rewards.  We keep a list of all of each child’s Wampum and use this record for extra incentives.  Extra Incentives are held two times a year.  We call these Reading Extravaganzas.  No Wampum will be traded for these, they are extra incentives that can be earned.  A cumulative total will be kept on the computer and we will notify the students when these “extra” will be held and who is eligible.  The first Extravaganza, January’s Winter Extravaganza, is for Wampum earned from September 1, 2007, through January 18, 2008.  Wampum earned from January 21, 2008 through May 16, 2008, will be used for the Spring Extravaganza.  May 16, 2008, will be the very last day students can hand in reading sheets for Wampum.

REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH EXTRAVAGANZA:

Extra play - fifty (50) Wampum

Dessert with Mrs. Cole - seventy-five (75) Wampum

Lunch with Mrs. Cole - one-hundred and fifty (150) Wampum

If you have any questions about our reading program, please ask your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,

Sonya K. Cole, Principal
