Principal’s Report
April - 2008

The PTA Volunteer Reception was held on April 1, 2008.  One hundred fifty volunteers were invited to attend.  This volunteer program aids our school immensely.  Each volunteer received a DVES cup and a volunteer bookmark with a pin.  Refreshments were enjoyed at the conclusion of the reception.  It was impressive to learn how much these volunteers do for our school.

The children in Mrs. Thiele’s second grade class interviewed an adult about their occupation.  Then each child read its interview to the class.  Some of the children were videotaped as they were reading the interview.  Ryan Wehner talked about his dad being a chef.  Mrs. Thiele’s class was invited over to the Warrior Café for quiche and juice.  For dessert the students were served ice cream!  Mr. Wehner talked to the students about cooking.  It was a most enjoyable afternoon!

Mrs. Kudrich’s and Mrs. Lambert’s second grades made poetry books in April to celebrate poetry month.  Students wrote sound poems, acrostic poems, and color poems following a spring theme.  These poems were then illustrated along with two poems by famous authors.  All were placed into individual books and taken home to share with families.

Mrs. Lambert’s class has been participating in Scholastic Book Bulb’s Classrooms Care program.  Each class was asked to read 100 books to save 100 acres of rainforest.  The students were proud of reaching their goal and helping the environment.

The Pennsylvania Music Educators Association held their annual Orchestra Festival at Whitehall/Coplay High School on Friday, April 11, 2008.

In between PSSA testing, Mrs. Atchison’s fourth grade class was being entertained by creative students.  Each student selected a book and written a report on it.  In addition, each has chosen his/her own way of presenting that book to the class.  Some have written and performed skits, commercials, posters, power points, and dioramas.  They have had a great time and learned about a lot of new books to read.

Mrs. Atchison’s fourth grade class divided into teams to research how each presidential candidate stands on issues chosen by our students and families.  The four issues chosen were: spending on national defense or services (guns or butter), lower taxes and good jobs, health care, and lower gas prices and alternate energy sources.  After each team presented their facts, we held a presidential election choosing from among the three candidates.

Earth Day was held on Thursday, April 22, 2008.  This was an educational experience for all of our staff and students.  There were so many interesting projects going on it was hard to know which to observe first.  After the morning activities were completed, Sadecky’s Puppet presented an assembly for all grades.
