Advisor: Mr. Gary Dennis, ext. 7068
Who the club is open to: Students with high mathematics grades and
recommendations from math teachers.
Meetings: Mu Alpha Theta does not meet often
as a club. However, members participate in various competitions when
they are
scheduled and offer
tutoring on an as-needed basis.
Purpose/Goals of club: Promote mathematics to the general school population
and provide members of the club with opportunities for enrichment in
the field of mathematics.
Major Activities: Tutoring is offered on
an as-needed basis, either in mathematics course work or in SAT preparation.
Those
interested receiving
tutoring should contact Mr. Dennis at 296-3656, ext. 7068. Also, Mu
Alpha Theta sponsors the Weekend Challenge, a year-long competition
open to any student
in the school in which teams or individuals attempt to solve non-routine
math problems each weekend. Members participate in the Pennsylvania
Math League Competition, a year-long competition with Pennsylvania
schools
in which members of the club take an exam each month, and the American
Mathematics Contest, a national exam open to any member of the club
(given in February).
Other Information: Mu Alpha Theta is a mathematics
honor society that provides its members with opportunities for enrichment
and further
exploration into mathematics than they would get in the classroom. Through
competitions
and the weekend challenge problem, the students are challenged to think
beyond what they would typically need to for a routine problem. They
are given
an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills through local,
state, and national competitions. Also, Mu Alpha Theta promotes mathematics
to the general population by providing tutoring for any math course
or for SAT preparation. This also provides the members of Mu Alpha Theta
the experience of teaching mathematics, which may be valuable to them
in the future.
