What is Model UN?

Model UN is an extracurricular activity that allows students to take the role of leaders of various nations to debate, analyze, and solve global issues. Model UN is an international activity, with high school and collage clubs throughout the world.

Why join Model UN?

Model UN gives you the opportunity to practice your research, critical thinking, debating, writing, and public speaking skills. Students can participate in Model UN at DV, as well as in competition at several colleges in the spring. This is an activity that you can join on the high school level, and continue in college, as there are national competitions on both the high school and university levels. Many colleges have Model UN teams as part of their international studies departments.

When is Model UN?

This year's DV Annual Model UN Security Council session is scheduled for December 14th in the auditorium. Additionally, students who participate in the DV competition will be eligible to be selected to participate in an International competition at the University of Pennsylvania in January and Regional Competitions at Lock Haven University in April, and in DeSals University in May. Up to 12 students will participate in each college competition.

What is the DV Annual Model UN Security Council session?

The DV MUNSC is run as a session of the United Nations Security Council. Up to three students will represent each of the 15 current Security Council member nations, to solve a developing political crisis. The session will last the entire day in the auditorium. Students will prepare resolutions, debate the problem, and participate in presentations from various guest speakers on the issue.

Who can participate?

Up to 45 students can participate in the DV MUNSC. No more than 12 students can participate in each of the college competitions.

How are the PENN and Lock Haven teams chosen?

Any students interested in being selected for the Lock Haven and/or PENN teams must participate in DV MUNSC in December. Participants for Lock Haven and PENN will be chosen based on the research, analysis, and writing ability shown.

How much time is involved in Model UN?

To prepare for the DV MUNSC, you will have to research the policies, laws, etc. of the country you choose to represent. You will have to write a one-page resolution to solve the issue by Thanksgiving. There will be approximately four meetings before the December session. The actual session takes place during the school day.

If you are chosen to participate at PENN or Lock Haven, you will have to research information on your country and the issue to be debated, and write a one-page resolution to solve the issue (for Lock Haven) by March or write three two-page position papers (for PENN) by January. For each competition, there will be at least 4 meetings after school.

What countries can be represented?

DV MUNSC: Bulgaria, Cameroon, China, Columbia, France, Guinea, Ireland, Mauritius, Mexico, Norway, Russia Federation, Singapore, Syria, United Kingdom, United States

LOCK HAVEN: Argentina, Japan, Luxembourg, and Rwanda

PENN: TBA-the team will choose a country in October

What is the cost for the competitions?

For the DV MUNSC, there is no cost.

The cost for Lock Haven will be approximately $40 per student. This cost includes lodging, breakfast, and lunch, for two days (Wed. night thru Fri. afternoon). Students will be responsible for two meals.

The cost for the PENN will be approximately $100. This cost includes lodging, research materials, dance, tour of Philadelphia, and guest speaker (Thurs. morning thru Sun. afternoon).
