Scholastic Bowl is open to any student, 9-12. Intramurals are held
in the Fall. Occasional team practices occur in the fall, and begin
running in earnest after
intramurals are over. The season
runs throughout the winter and spring.
Scholastic Bowl emphasizes all areas of academic
knowledge, focusing on quick recall, as teams attempt to buzz in to
answer questions.
We compete in several important competitions. The most involved of
these is the Rotary Scholastic Bowl League, a league comprised of teams
from Northeastern PA, New Jersey, and New York. Delaware Valley has
been a frequent qualifier for the National Championships, having advanced
to the National tournament in nine of the last ten years. In 1997,
DV took 15th place at the National Championships in New Orleans. In
2002,
DV
tied
for
11th
place. DV has made the "Sweet 16" at Nationals four times in the last
11 years.
In addition to competing interscholastically, the Scholastic Bowl
program hosts intramural play for all interested high school students
in grades 9-12. This intramural league involves teams of three to five
students each, competing in matches held after school on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. Anyone interested should contact Mr. DeVizia.
Other major activities include competing in the Pennsylvania Academic
Competition, and some computer-based competitions, including the Twenty
Questions Internet Competition from Questions Unlimited, the organization
associated with the National Academic Championship.
As a service project, the team also conducts annual Scholastic Bowl
tournaments for fifth graders in Delaware Valley schools. The Varsity
team has also played host to Junior Varsity (9-10 grade) teams
from
area
schools
in the
Spring.
Team members
serve as registrants, scorekeepers, timekeepers, and in various other
roles.
