General and Performed Music

Grade 6

General music is a course requirement for all sixth grade students and meets every day for a nine-week period. Students study music theory and focus on the elements of music: tempo dynamics, tone color, pitch and form. This course includes performance evaluations as well as retention of basic information. Critical listening to music is also included in this course.

Grade 7

General Music is a course requirement for all seventh grade students who are not enrolled in a performance ensemble.  It meets every day for nine-week period. Music understanding from the Early, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical time periods are covered in this course. Critical listening to music is also a part of this course.

Grade 8

General Music is a course requirement for all eighth grade students who are not enrolled in a performance ensemble.  It meets every day for a nine-week period. The main focus of this course is understanding of Program Music. Music from the Romantic, Impressionistic, and Twentieth Century are studied. Critical listening to music is also included in this course.

Music Performing Groups

The DDMS band, chorus, and orchestra rehearse every day during the same period, following a six-day schedule. Students can be in more than one performing group or all three, with rehearsal time being shared. Each group has a full rehearsal twice during the six-day schedule.

 

6th Grade Band

Band is available to students with prior experience who play at level 1.5 or 2, and enjoy performing, practicing, and developing their talent. Students are enrolled based on an audition.  Attendance at school performances is a requirement.

7th and 8th Grade Band

Band is available to students who participated successfully in the sixth grade program. Band members who enjoy practicing, performing, and developing their talents are enrolled in the program. The Band performs two concerts a year, one in the winter and one in the spring. Attendance at these performances is a requirement.

6th Grade Chorus

The 6th grade chorus is available to students who have shown an ability to match pitches ("carry a tune"), who enjoy singing, and who are interested in developing their talent. Students are enrolled upon the recommendation of their elementary music teacher. The chorus performs two and three part music in a variety of styles in at least three concerts per year. Attendance at performances is required.

7th and 8th Grade Chorus

The 7th and 8th grade chorus is available to students who have shown an ability to match pitches ("carry a tune"), who enjoy singing, and who are interested in developing their talent. Students are enrolled upon the recommendation of their chorus teacher. The chorus performs three and four part music in a variety of styles in at least three concerts per year. Attendance at performances is required.

6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Orchestra

The 6th,  7th and 8th grade orchestra is available to students who already play a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, and bass) and wish to develop this talent. The Orchestra performs a winter concert and a spring concert each year, and attendance at these performances is required.
